Bangkok is a sprawling metropolis and can be a little overwhelming for some visitors, who might prefer one of the Kingdom’s more quiet destinations. In the north, Chiang Mai has quickly developed a reputation as an appealing city for tourism, offering a very different experience from Bangkok but without feeling too isolated. Some visitors who find Bangkok to be too “touristy” really enjoy the traditional side of Chiang Mai, which is a little more local and laid back. Jungle trekking is extremely popular from the city, as knowledgeable guides allow tourists to explore the beautiful mountains and countryside of northern Thailand.
Perhaps the most famous part of Thailand is found in the southern part of the country, along the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, where stunning islands and beaches make dreams of tropical paradises a reality. In the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is the largest and most popular island, boasting its own international airport and many fine choices for accommodation, cuisine and nightlife. The island's infrastructure has improved considerably in the last few years and many luxury properties can be bought or rented at excellent rates. On the other side of the Peninsula sits Phuket, home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Famed around the globe, Phuket is truly one of the finest resort destinations on the planet with everything a traveller could desire readily available and easily found. Yet thankfully the island is still not overdeveloped in most locations.
